Haciendia Pinilla Surf Spots

Playa Avellanas Beautiful white sand beach starting on the South end of Hacienda Pinilla with several breaks. At the river mouth there are left and right breaks (watch out for a rock if you go left). Usually works on low to ¾ tide on a south-southwest swell. Just North from the the river mouth, in front of Hacienda Pinilla’s newly constructed beach club, there is a right reef break called Little Hawaii, which breaks on a big swell and holds up to 15 feet, breaking right. On the Southern end of the river mouth there are several beach breaks. One is called Palo Seco, peaks left and right on mid to high tide. Further South there is a left reef break, probably the most powerful break in Avellanas, only for the more experienced surfers.

Playa Negra

World class right breaking over reef, located in front of Hotel Playa Negra. To get to this break it will take you about 20 minutes by car.

Playa Junquillal

Beach break just South from Playa Negra , very fast and hollow wave.

Playa Frijolar, Marbella

Black sand beach with various beach breaks, powerful and hollow. If you are looking to get tubed, this is the place to go. Marbella is South from Playa Negra, a 50 minute drive South from Hacienda Pinilla.

Playa Langosta and Tamarindo

In Tamarindo Bay there are several breaks, beach break, river mouth break and reef break. The waves don’t get as big as in Avellanas and Negra but are great for the beginning surfer. In Tamarindo there are lots of options for surf lessons, and board rental and purchase. Tamarindo is just 25 minutes North from Hacienda Pinilla.

Playa Grande

Playa Grande has many beach breaks, quite fast and breaking best between mid and high tide. Just on the other side of Tamarindo’s river mouth there is a spot called “casita.” Further north towards the Hotel Las Tortugas there are several peaks both left and right. The waves are fast and powerful and with the off shore winds very hollow and tubular.
